Flowers…

Once in the early nineties a grad student had a quote from Georgia O’Keefe taped to her door.  It read:  “I paint flowers because they’re cheaper than models and they don’t move.”

She’s wrong on one thing, they do move, but for the rest of it, I agree. Mostly.

I’m now painting flowers because they cost less than models and they don’t move as much; and because they remind me of life, and me being human-o-centric, life reminds me of people, and people’s lives remind me of my life.  So there’s a bit of personification happening, and since I’m painting two, they remind me of a couple, of sorts.  So:

First comes flowers and the next thing you know you are cornering the market on over-priced Hello Kitty plastic drink ware.

I’m also painting flowers because it feels like a moment to keep things simple, elegant, focusing more on color.  Lighter.

So, flowers cost less, move less, they act out little dramas and bring a little bit of sunshine to any room.  We could use a bit of sunshine.

Sometimes, they are also just pretty flowers.
